Hello! This is the intro to Morgan’s Musings. Which is currently the name of this blog but may change at some point. Such is the transitory nature of life. To those first five subscribers (myself among them), I am immeasurably grateful. We’ll get to ten in no time! My goal is one blog a month this year. I figured for this first full entry I would dive into my history with each aforementioned interest. Here we go:
Marketing
Most of my professional career from the first internships to my latest role involved some element of marketing. Of course, there was the necessary stint in retail that everyone should spend time in, if only to learn about the absolute indecency of some folks. Those stories may follow but back to business. Copywriting and Branding are my favourite areas to nerd out about and I stay current on trends by reading industry newsletters. Project management, SEO, vendor collaboration, and putting strategic thought behind all of it are also in my wheelhouse. If you’d like to see my work, please visit my portfolio.
Yoga
This journey probably began during daycare naptime with those soothing soundtracks they’d play as we drifted to sleep in sun-dappled playrooms on mats smelling of disinfectant. More intentionally, it developed during high school at yoga club meetings and subsequent summers throughout college with the State of Mind free yoga series on the lawn of Utah’s capitol building. One of the clients at my first agency was a yoga studio in Texas and for one beautiful month before COVID shut everything down, I had an internship at a hot yoga studio. It was my goal to find a new studio in the PNW and I am pleased to share that I’ve found two!
Sustainability
Honestly, this topic should be at the forefront of everyone’s minds. Sustainability and environmentalism as well as the science of what is happening on our planet are important, fascinating, and occasionally frightening. Ignorance is anything but bliss. Ignorance is apathy.
Food
An essential component of life and a common love language, food is often tensely debated in my home. What it should or shouldn’t be, how to balance rising costs, why can’t we insert nutrition directly to our corporeal forms a la “Videodrome.” Okay, maybe it’s not really food in that guy, but there is plenty of food for thought. If ye be squeamish, stay away from those links. In a more wholesome way, a good meal really is the way to the heart. After my grandma passed, I was able to take her collection of handwritten recipes from the kitchen and am transcribing those to print in a recipe book for family.
Music
As influential as it was to my college experience, music remains a major part of my life, though I find my relationship with it much different now. Multiple friends have worked in the industry or created independently yet there is no instrument I’ve developed talents in. I’d like to sing better and maybe one day finally learn how to play bass guitar. Or I can keep making playlists and supporting other amazing acts. Or all of the above.
Photography
During college I took graduation photos and designed announcement cards for four people and had a stint as an assistant at an art gallery. In the years after, I’ve interned for a yoga studio, taking photos at their community events and at the studio. Since then, I’ve taken family photos for a friend while his grandfather was visiting from Africa and again for a graduation celebration while their European family visited. I was the attending photographer for my neighbor’s intimate wedding ceremony and I’m telling you these pictures turned out like a southern belle magazine editorial! However, the subject of photography also brings with it a tale of woe for a future post.
Death Doula-ship
A newer interest and something I truly hope to cultivate is that of the final unknown. In Spring 2024, my best friend financially supported me in taking death doula certification courses in-person and online through the Deathwives collective. For the latter of these courses, I was also awarded a small scholarship for which I am thankful. I’ve held an interest in spooky subjects since a young age and for a number of years made a point to visit my favourite cemetery on my birthday. It just makes sense I’d be doing this now when you consider how many nights my middle school best friend and I spent watching Ghost Adventures.
Film
Is it any wonder that I really am quite fond of the video medium after 2+ years of a Regal Unlimited membership and 7+ years in a relationship with a cinephile who calls himself “The Archivist”? Honestly, the Blu-Ray collection on this one is significant! I own a smaller, curated collection and simply benefit from his artistic obsession.
Poetry
We did it, ladies. A great idea finally made it out of the group chat! Two good friends from very different parts of my life and I have joined together in inspiration with a notion of devotion to the written word and girl talk. Our first meeting was held 22 January 2025 and we set the goal of bringing each week one thing we write, one inspiration, and an update on progress towards our life goals. Timeless traditions happening now; Poetry Social Hour will be available on Instagram and Substack.
Thank you and thank you again for reading this far. If you can relate to any of this or would like to read more, please leave a comment or email me! I’d love to connect and hear your feedback. These are nine deep interests of mine spun together with vulnerability. I look forward to sharing my experience in each area & hope y’all might share with anyone you think of as you read along.
